DEBRA BRASHEAR SIMPSON
'As the leaves give shape to the wind, so the colors of the palette give shape to the human spirit." Debra Brashear Simpson's portraits reveal the inner life of her subjects - the fire, the impishness, the defiance, the love of reverie, the passion for action - all that which animates the outer form. Long before brush touches canvas, Debra familiarizes herself with the characteristic colors, gestures and psychological landscape that will make manifest her subject's spirit.
Portraiture winner of the 1991 France-USA Competition, Debra is a frequent exhibiter in France. She has represented her state in the National Organization for Women Artists. Her virtuosity in fashion and jewelry design is widely recognized. Her work in precious stones, metals and ancient beads has been featured in numerous fine art exhibits. Her fashion creations have appeared in Vogue and Town and Country, and she has produced many costumes for the ballet.
The facial beauty of her portraits is achieved from a lifelong sensitivity to tone and hue. She studied at the University of Alabama at Huntsville, the University of Tennessee, Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia, and Alabama A&M. The recipient of many prestigious awards, Debra's work has been exhibited in shows in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, DC and Philadelphia, as well as in her region of the Tennessee Valley.
Her paintings are displayed in the homes of many private collectors. Her work offers a radiant celebration of the grace and power of the loved ones we hold dear.
